Unglazed stoneware・Iron oxide・5 day wood-fired
We named this line from ceramicist Liao Guo Hua “mercury” because of the surface texture and color of the pieces. To achieve the effect, the ceramicist mixes a small amount of iron oxide particles into the Taiwanese clay body. The piece is then hand-formed and fired in a wood-kiln for 5 days.
What emerges reveals the transformative effect of wood-firing: the surface of the teapot appears glazed from layers of fly ash falling on the piece and vitrifying during firing. This natural ash “glaze” is thicker on the curved handle and back of the teapot, with a beautiful crackle on its surface that will develop a patina with use. The iron oxide particles express as dark sun-spots on the umber, sage, and copper surface. The interior is unglazed.
The pot body is classically shaped. Delicate lid finial, spout, and handle complete this tea pot.
Usage and care: Hand-wash with water only.
