A reverence for tea drives the work of Taiwanese master potter, Zhang Yun Cheng. His home sits in the hills of Nantou County, surrounded on all sides by tea gardens, a rich tableau of green and misty grey. Against this backdrop, the distinct relationship between craft and culture reflects back in each handmade piece.
Opposing textures and angles create a tension and harmony in this compelling stoneware teabowl. Raw, rough hewn edges of the clay are exaggerated through the sandy grog brought to the surface during the five day wood firing process. Yang in spirit, these elemental features are balanced by the soft sweep of shino glaze, crawling with smooth curves across the form. The tension of hard and soft, dark and light, angular and rounded create a vessel with both tactile and visual gravity, belied by the vessels precise balance and fit in the hand.
This bowl is one of a kind.
