Copper・A century of craftsmanship
Kato Seisakusho has been manufacturing traditional Japanese tea canisters since 1895. Every component is cut and rolled from sheet metal, using foot pedal operated cutters, and assembled with pressure as opposed to solder. This process has remained consistent throughout the decades, with most of the work performed by 83 year old artisan Sazuka-san, who has been immersed in the craft for 68 years.
These copper tea vessels were made to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Kato family business. Copper has long been used to store the most prized teas. Like tea leaves, the beauty of these canisters is fluid, changing as the years go by, and developing a beautiful, dark patina. They carry a quiet, unassuming gravity, which compliments much of the teaware we source. Use them well.
